While most people focus on how cute the babies are, the chicks help scientists understand genetics, including genetic engineering and preserving the genes of rare chicken breeds. The "Coal Mine" re-creates a working deep-shaft, bituminous coal mine inside the museum's Central Pavilion, using original equipment from Old Ben #17, circa 1933. In this unique exhibit, visitors go underground and ride a mine train to different parts of the mine and learn the basics of its operation. The experience takes around 30 minutes and requires an additional fee. On October 3, 2019, the museum announced that it intends to change its name to the Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry after a donation of $125 million from Chicago billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin.

It is the largest single gift in the museum's history, effectively doubling its endowment. We are all about stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning in everyone. To protect vulnerable community members, including our younger guests who are not yet eligible for vaccination against COVID-19, masks are required for EVERYONE ages 2 and up when visiting the California Science Center. In 2019, two years after the conclusion of the project, the collaboration paid off. With its new strategic plan and additional resources, the museum has renewed its commitment to serving youth, and MSI's team, including donors, are aligned on a collective vision of the future. MSI raised more funds than in any previous year, including the single largest gift in its history—$125 million, nearly half of its $380 million fundraising goal—that will help ensure the years ahead. The South Park Commissioners won approval in a referendum to sell $5 million in bonds to pay for restoration costs, hoping to turn the building into a sculpture museum, a technical trade school, and other things. However, after a few years, the building was selected as the site for a new science museum. The Museum of Science and Industry, in city centre Manchester, showcases the city's stories of innovation from the build up to the Industrial Revolution to the hi-tech developments of today. It's built on the site of the world's oldest surviving passenger railway station and the entrance is the magnificent Great Western Warehouse. MSI is largely privately funded, and the efforts culminating in Hunt Design's wayfinding program cost $2 million of a $205 million capital campaign called Science Rediscovered. The museum's executive committee and 80-member board of trustees was not tripping over itself, checkbook open, to realize the project. Signs don't have the same enticing donor-naming opportunities as content-rich new exhibits, says David Woody, MSI's director of design and development. More important, he adds, almost everyone in the decision-making pipeline required an education in EGD and the benefits that a comprehensive signage system could yield. The naming conventions for each floor only amplified the bafflement. The entry hall, for example, was previously known as the Great Hall, which didn't provide visitors any navigational clues.

Renaming floors based on simple descriptors linked with level numbers—Entry Hall, Lower Level 1, Main Level 2, Balcony Level 3—was more intuitive. Hunt Design also streamlined the number of signs as well as the destinations they advertise. "To help people sort through the information, we directed only to the major exhibits on a given floor," Temple explains. This practice is discouraged by sector trade groups which point to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act when they call for charities to refrain from making loans to directors and executives. And although employees and trustees are permitted to make loans to charities, this practice can also result in real and/or perceived conflict of interest problems for the charity.

Furthermore, it is problematic because it is an indicator that the organization is not financially secure. This popular family destination is open on a limited basis and welcoming visitors to the museum to explore the new Dinosaurs Revealed exhibit as well as the Natural Science Hall, Empirical Theater, Kendall Planetarium and the USS Blueback submarine. They researched, brainstormed, and pushed forward new concepts, meeting weekly to share and build on ideas. At the end of the four week period, each team prototyped their ideas—new outdoor programming, software tools for visiting tour groups—and pitched them to each other. At the end of the research and prototyping phases, MSI and IDEO developed a vision called Provoking Minds, Inspiring Futures, creating six detailed design briefs to equip MSI teams to bring initiatives forward. The briefs laid out everything from recommending a new Department of Next, dedicated to ensuring that the future is at the heart of everything the MSI does, to MSI Runway, a place for experimental, small-scale, and limited-run exhibits.

The ideas were brought to life with an interactive exhibit, built quickly with everyday materials like plywood and circuit boards, to demonstrate that creating an inspiring vision of the future doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor. In the late 1920s—due entirely to the initiative and philanthropy of Julius Rosenwald—an exterior restoration took place in order to create a building more suitable for a permanent museum. The plan was to remove all the staff and replicate the building's exterior in a lasting material.
